The School of Design consists of six departments: Environmental Design, Industrial Design, Product Design, Digital Media Art, Fashion Design, and Basic Department. It currently has over 50 faculty members from renowned domestic and international institutions such as Zhejiang University, China Academy of Art, Berlin University of the Arts, London College of Fashion, University of Surrey, Osaka University, Kyoto Institute of Technology, University of Reading, and Chiba University. Among them, there are 5 full professors, 8 associate professors, 1 postdoctoral fellow, and 4 doctoral degree holders.
The School of Design has established research and innovation platforms including the Zhejiang Industrial University Infant Products Research Center, Zhejiang Industrial University/ Beingmate (贝因美) Industrial Design Innovation and Development Center, and Zhimei (智美) Industrial Design Research Center. It also houses research institutions such as the Modern Industrial Design Institute and Space Art Design Institute. The school is equipped with machine processing, woodworking, ceramics studios, animation labs, comprehensive labs, and fashion labs, which are equipped with 3D printers, laser engraving machines, lathes, band saws, cameras, sewing machines, and other equipment. These facilities can support industrial design, ceramic works, home products design and making, animation short film production, and fashion design and tailoring.
The faculty of the School of Design has achieved fruitful research results. In recent years, they have undertaken nearly 70 national, provincial, municipal, and other research projects, with over 27 million RMB in research funding, including 2 national projects and 7 provincial projects. The faculty has published 130 academic papers, including 55 A-level and SCI, EI, ISTP indexed papers, and authored more than 20 books and textbooks. They have also been granted 425 patents, including 2 international invention patents, 18 domestic invention patents, 344 utility model patents, and successfully transferred 1 invention patent.
For many years, the School of Design has been committed to promoting international cooperation and has engaged in multi-level communications with oversea universities to cultivate students with an international perspective and innovative design concepts. Since 2013, the School of Design has collaborated with Bridgeport University in the United States on "2+2" and "3+1" programs for undergraduate students majoring in industrial design, aiming to cultivate industrial design and management talents with an international vision and comprehensive aesthetic ability.
DEPARTMENT OF INDUSTRIAL DESIGN
This department aims to cultivate high-level, composite, and applied talents with an international perspective and innovative design thinking, who can engage in industrial design-related activities and possess design development and management capabilities. The program follows an internationally aligned education model, emphasizing the systematic cultivation of students' professional design and practical operation abilities. The main research areas include industrial design, infant product design, furniture design, jewelry design and processing, among others.
DEPARTMENT OF PRODUCT DESIGN
This department aims to cultivate composite and applied talents with professional knowledge and theory, innovative research and development capabilities, and practical operational skills in product design. It combines traditional culture with the exploration of contemporary culture, focusing on the teaching and talent cultivation of cultural and creative product design, fashion product design, and information product design. The main research areas include cultural and creative product design, brand image design, packaging of product design, sign systems design，textile product design, fabric pattern design,illustration design,UI design, interactive design,etc.
DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN
Under the background of urbanization and the concept of "Beautiful China"(美丽中国), this department implements a "studio-based" and "project-based" teaching method, enabling students to master core skills in landscape and interior design through professional and practical courses. It aims to cultivate applied art and design talents with practical abilities to meet social needs. The main research areas include interior design, landscape planning, public art, garden design, architectural design, and beautiful rural construction planning.
DEPARTMENT OF DIGITAL MEDIA ART
This department aims to cultivate modern digital media art talents who can adapt to the needs of modernization, possess practical operational abilities, and innovative spirit. The department promotes regional integration, serves the local community, and encourages innovation. It combines digital media art design with computer-aided design to comprehensively and deeply equip students with professional knowledge, creative thinking, and social skills. The main research areas include video post-production, game design and development, interaction design, animation design and production, photography, etc.
DEPARTMENT OF FASION DESIGN
This department cultivates practical and innovative high-level applied talents with solid professional knowledge and skills in fashion design. Students are encouraged to have a broad perspective, flexibility, independent thinking, and the ability to integrate and share new cultures. The main research areas include fashion design, textile cultural and creative product design, garment design, integrated fabric and clothing design, fashion textile product trend research, brand planning, etc.
In talent cultivation, the department provides rigorous and comprehensive basic training to help students deeply understand the basic laws and framework of the design process and enhance their professional qualities and cognitive abilities. The program emphasizes the training of students' design thinking and innovative abilities, improving their artistic accomplishment, and laying a solid theoretical and practical foundation for their successful entry into professional learning. The Basic Department is mainly responsible for teaching basic courses and art history, as well as engaging in creative and theoretical research in the field of art.
